Time spent away from the screen encourages healthy physical and social development. Research shows that too much screen time can lead to impairments in brain structure and function, changes in behavioral and mental health, sedentary lifestyle and obesity, and more.
LiveWell Frederick’s 5-2-1-0 program has a few simple rules when it comes to screen time. This week, we challenge you and your family to join our screen-time challenge.
- Limit to two hours or less of screen time every day.
- No screen time for children under the age of two.
- No TVs, computers, or games where you sleep.

Explore Story Path
Back for a second season, Story Path encourages physical activity and literacy. Instead of sitting in front of the phone or TV, your family will explore a short walking path with pages from a children’s book as you walk along. Enjoy Virtual Activities
During COVID-19 and social distancing efforts, many Frederick County organizations have taken their services online. From virtual storytimes to online webinars, health and wellness content, and other educational opportunities, there are so many ways to do more than scroll through social media mindlessly all day.
Try a Family Workout Together
Another great activity for the 2 hours or less you may spend online each day? Physical fitness. There are hardly any excuses not to get 1 hour or more of physical activity daily when so many local gyms and fitness centers have taken their programs online. For example, while branches are temporarily closed, YMCA of Frederick County has an entire catalog of 100-plus virtual videos and resources available. Chances are your favorite gym, trainer, or fitness guru is offering free content on their social media channels, too.
Get Outside Instead
When it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic, being outdoors is generally safer than close indoor quarters. Time spent in front of a screen could be better spent on outdoor play instead. Leave the phone at home and safely explore Frederick County parks, walking trails, bicycle loops, and more.
