Is your family getting at least 1 hour or more of physical activity each day? You don’t need expensive exercise equipment or to spend a ton of money to stay fit and active. In Frederick County, it’s easy to make family time active time. Consider one of these 10 low-cost (or no-cost!) physical activities in your backyard.

Get Active in Frederick County

  1. Take a Walk Downtown – Explore the beauty and charm of Historic Downtown Frederick. The full tour of downtown is 2.5 miles, mostly flat, and completely paved. Take in your surroundings or learn about local legends and cultural amenities. The Frederick Visitor Center offers a variety of maps, guides (including a self-guided walking tour brochure), and information to get you started. Check it out.
  2. Hit the Trail – Discover the trails of Frederick County. Get a FREE Wegmans Hit the Trail Passport and take advantage of town and county trails. Record your visits by rubbing trail markers on your passport. When complete, drop off your passport at the local recreational department for a chance to win prizes!
  3. Make Spring & Summer Count – Did you know that Frederick County Parks & Recreation publishes a brochure, Recreater, with tons of activities and community events for preschool-aged children, teens, and adults? They also offer several summer camps for children, including Monocacy Day Camp, Fountain Rock Nature Camp, Catoctin Creek Nature Camp, History Camp, and more.   4. Join the YMCA of Frederick County – The YMCA wants everyone to have the opportunity to participate in its programs and enjoy the facilities. That’s why financial assistance is available for memberships and summer camp programs. Between the fitness center and group fitness classes, there are plenty of low-cost ways to focus on overall wellness and healthier living.
  5. Take a Bike Tour – From the Frederick Historic Bicycle Loop to the scenic 40-mile covered bridge route, Frederick County offers perfect bicycle routes and trails for touring and road cyclists. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or just want to explore the amazing scenery while staying active, it’s easy to explore your county on two wheels.
  6. Register for a Class – The City of Frederick Parks & Recreation Department offers many programs and classes for children and adults. There are classes like fencing, karate, pickleball, and Zumba, team sports like baseball and lacrosse, plus youth sports like soccer.   7. Plan a Day in the Park — Pack a picnic – a healthy one, of course! – and invite the entire family to an afternoon in the park. Don’t forget to bring activities that everyone can enjoy, like badminton, frisbee, or plan an outdoor obstacle course, for example. A lovely day in Baker Park, Gambrill State Park, or Cunningham Falls State Park is just what the family needs this time of year.   8. Get Competitive – Challenge your friends and family to a team physical challenge. Think bowling at Terrace Lanes or a pick-up game of basketball at the YMCA or the William R. Talley Recreation Center.
  9. Go for a Swim – When the weather heats up, taking a dip at area swimming pools is a great way to cool off and work out. Braddock Heights, Edward P. Thomas, Jr. Memorial Swimming Pool, and William R. Diggs Memorial Swimming Pool all offer season passes or punch cards that allow you to save money when you swim.
  10. Try a New Sport or Physical Activity – Why not try something outside-the-box? Outdoor recreation abounds in Frederick County, and there are many unique ways to get out and get active. Give indoor rock climbing at The Boulder Yard a go, or challenge yourself to whitewater rafting, canoeing, zip-lining, or kayaking at River & Trail Outfitters. Plus, TreeTrekkers, an outdoor aerial challenge park for climbing, swinging, and zipping through the forest, opens soon.

Did you know the City of Frederick Parks & Recreation Department offers a Reduced Registration Program? The program allows any eligible youth under the age of 18 to receive 50% off pre-identified programs, including soccer, karate, tennis, writers group, and more! Qualifying programs for spring/summer 2020 include:

  • Youth Soccer
  • Golden Knights Karate
  • Frederick Young Writers
  • Summer Playground Program
  • Tennis Instruction

Registration takes place every Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the William R. Talley Recreation Center Registration Desk, located at 121 N.
