A healthy community is a prosperous community. Individual health, well-being, and happiness have the power to positively affect the economic health of the community as a whole.

And while you may not immediately correlate the two, there are countless studies that show they are perpetually linked. Optimal health and personal well-being are critical for individuals, communities, and companies to thrive.

If there’s one thing the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us, it’s the need to not only prioritize our personal physical and mental well-being but also that of our fellow community members and area businesses. We’re all in this together!

Here Are a Few Ideas to Support Your Health & the Health of Your Community

Participate in a local health challenge, like a charity run or walk.

Not only does this benefit you as an individual, but it also benefits the organizations who are working hard to help the underserved in our county. Many events are also offering a virtual component as well. It’s a win-win! Check out the YMCA of Frederick County (a LiveWell Frederick partner), for example, and keep an eye on LiveWell Frederick’s Story Path. It’s back for a third season very soon.

Support local growers by frequenting farmers’ markets or stores that offer healthy local produce.

You can feel good about what you put in your body as well as who you’re giving your money to. You never know, that head of lettuce or ear of corn might have been grown by the farmer down the street! There are plenty of farmers’ markets and CSAs in Frederick County. Look to Homegrown Frederick (a LiveWell Frederick partner) and LiveWell Frederick’s Farmers Market Guide for local produce near you.

Choose Frederick County businesses for your fitness, wellness, or gift-giving needs.

Before choosing a national chain, consider a more homegrown option. There are plenty of businesses right here in Frederick County that provide services to keep your body, mind, and spirit in shape. Stepping up your self-care is good for the soul, and for business. (Gift cards to these establishments are also a great option!) Frederick Health Rewards even offers discounts on featured vendors, including ProMotion Fitness at Frederick Health (a LiveWell Frederick partner), Common Market Co-Op (a LiveWell Frederick partner), Onelife Fitness, and more.

Walk, run, or bike outside, and take advantage of all our beautiful county has to offer.

Each community in Frederick County has its own unique flavor and character. Why not couple a fitness outing with a lunch order supporting a local restaurant? (Make sure your choices support your commitment to the 5-2-1-0 program!) You can find a list of walking, biking, and hiking trails, plus Parks & Recreation guides, online.

Local businesses often rely on the support of the community to keep their doors open. Now more than ever, they look to us to keep their organization moving forward. By visiting area businesses in your own quest for health and wellness, you not only benefit yourself as an individual but also the community at large!
